Diwali Di Hatti

Bimal Chadha

This picture triggered memories of my Childhood. On perhaps my 3rd or 4th Birthday, the Family created a ‘Hatti’ for my Diwali Celebrations. It’s a ritual we carried from Pakistan during the migration.

Celebrated in Punjabi Refugee homes, like ours. A Toy Model of my Hatti was created for me. Made of Soft wood pieces, painted in cream. A two storey structure with many windows a large gate with an arch, decorated with many coloured foil strips that sparkled in the air. Triangular mini paper festoons and some confetti strewn around. A hand made Diya of Atta placed inside lit up the shop and looked festive and attractive A few Clay Murtis of Gods gave it a Religious look. Neighbours around would visit it and served Prasad and appreciate it. The Murtis had many coins around as offerings. On Diwali Day after Pooja, the family visited my Hatti to admire and give their blessings and a Gullak ( Piggy Bank) placed next was seeding money for my Hatti by the family. I felt good, happy and important standing with folded hands. A mini Pooja would be performed for my Hatti. A few years later was my brother’s turn for his Hatti. This simple ceremonial ritual has just faded way over time. One never sees it these days. A search on Google yielded shops of all types selling sweets, Diwali goods, fashion garments etc. overflowing the Markets - But NO Hatti. Alas the HATTIS of children and their childhood gone for good. Happy Diwali to all!
